Chapter 1: Demon Clans
You know the saying good always triumphs over evil? Well this my friends is a story about a struggle between good and evil, but it is also about a strong bond of love between two friends, and their struggle to keep that love alive as they go through hardships to not only save themselves… but the world as well.
We begin our story in a dimension much different from our own. In this dimension, demons were the ruling race, as humans are to ours. Now these demons are not like the ones you hear about in our churches or on the discovery channel. These demons were basically elves, not the ones that bake cookies in trees or make toys all year just for some fat guy to fly around the world in one night to deliver them, they were like the ones that you read about in books like “Lord of the Rings” or “Eragon”. They looked very similar to elves, but had opposite personalities. Elves are generally calm and peace loving, while demons, let’s just say, are the type of folk that if you make them angry… you just may end up with missing limb.
There were five different types of demons, whom were separated into villages devoted to that particular race, there were the earth demons who had control of what grew in certain places or where land marks were placed, some say that there were some earth demons powerful enough to quake the whole planet. The always changing water demons whom can take on any shape they like and acquire the characteristics of those objects. The great air demons, whom were known for there abilities to move objects with their minds, talk telepathically. And the ruthless fire demons who had the ability to destroy anything in their path.
As you may have noticed, I only told you about four of the types of demons. Well the fifth type didn’t exactly have a village devoted to their race, in fact there were so few of them that they were considered to be only a myth. These demons were demons of the night, with the power to bring back the dead.
We start our story at an inn, just north of the air demon territory… and as far as possible from the fire territory. A group four demons, the youngest, a girl of fire, the second oldest; a girl of water, the second youngest; a boy of air, and the oldest; a boy of earth. They had been wondering the country for about five months, and had recently stopped at the inn to rest, they paid to stay for about 2 weeks. We join them on their fifth day.
A young fire demoness, about 16 years of age, with long silver hair, Red eyes with black markings under them that looked like eyeliner, and pointed ears was sitting on her bed, which had shiny black velvet sheets on it, wearing a purple velvet bath robe, taking great care not to mess up while putting black nail polish on her nicely filed claw like fingernails.
The room was very well organized. The bed was a circular shape that took up a fourth of the room, the walls were a deep maroon color, which on them, hung many different types of weapons, next to which was a silver voice box. A robotic voice came from it. “Miss Rayna? You have a visitor.”
She looked up at it from her hands and said in a kind of annoyed tone. “Tell “Haru” I’m busy right now and not to barge in on me like he usually does!”
“Thank you I will tell your visitor right away.” The voice box then clicked and then there was silence… For About 3 Seconds!
The mechanical door quickly slid open and a air demon rushed into the room. He was about 6 foot 3 inches tall, he was very handsome and had a look of mischief in his gold colored eyes. His hair was the color of copper and was just long enough for the ends to line up with the bottoms of his also pointed ears. And on his cheeks he had three blue tiger stripes on each side of his face. He was wearing a black top with the sleeves ripped off, a yellow belt with a lightning bold shaped buckle and long baggy black pants. “Hi Rayna!!!” He yelled then grinned at her. Rayna screamed then instinctively pulled a small dagger out from under her black velvet pillow then threw it at him. The boys eyes were wide, stunned, he turned his head and saw the dagger sticking out of the wall next to his head, a chunk of his this brown hair on the floor right underneath it.
“You all most freaking hit me that time!!!!!” He yelled still shaking from the scare.
“Get Out of Here Haru!!!” Rayna screamed back at him. “YOUR SUCH A PERVE!!!!”
“WHAT THE HELL!!!?” A voice came from behind Haru. Haru slowly turned and saw something he really did not want to see. Standing there was another demon, Haru was 19 and this particular demon was 23. The man had silver hair and strange markings under his eyes just like Rayna but his hair was only to his shoulders and his eyes were a deeper red. He was very muscular, was wearing a black tunic with a green flame patterned breastplate over it, and long baggy forest green pants. The mans name was Haku, a giant ax wielding earth demon, and Rayna’s dreaded, over protective older brother!
“DAMMIT!!!!” Haru screamed, he then quickly ran past him and tore off down the hallway. “Get back here you stupid punk!!!” Haku yelled, ax at hand, running after him.
“What’s going on?” Came a voice from nowhere. Rayna looked around and then to the end of her bed. A tiny yellow monkey in a blue night dress was sitting there rubbing its tired little eyes. “Did Haru barge in on you… again?” It asked then let out a long yawn. Rayna nodded “Yep! Hey Kiyo? Can I ask you why boys such perverts?”
There was a popping noise and in the place of the little monkey was a water demoness, 18 years old, with long blonde hair which was in a braid that reached the middle of her back. She also had emerald green eyes and blue swirls on her cheeks. “Sadly, All men are like that. I guess it’s just in their nature. I mean two nights ago I caught Haku spying on me while I was in the shower.”
Rayna rolled her eyes then sighed. “That’s gross.”
“What’s on your mind?” Kiyo asked. “You haven’t left your room in four days and haven’t eaten in two. Haru and I have been worried sick, and Haku is like a mother hen… He has actually convinced himself that you are dying!
Memories flooded back to Rayna. You see, she was special. Rayna was a fire demon born of earth demon parents. No one could explain it, and her mother was ashamed of her daughter, after all… who would want to be the parent of a “Ruthless Killer”? People believed that all fire demons were good at was scorching people and or objects. She disowned Rayna the very second she was born, but her father swore to always take care of her and lover her as if she were another earth demon. The night that Rayna was born Haku ran away, not because he thought his parents would love his new sister more, but the fact that their mother was abusive. The young girl never knew she had an older brother until she was about nine, when she heard her father telling her mother that they heard news of Haku’s whereabouts.
The next morning he set out to find Haku and, let’s just say, never returned.
Rayna was devastated when she heard the news that her father had been killed by fire demon bandits, about 3 years after he had left.
Her mother saw that as the perfect opportunity to get the young girl out of her life, without her husband around it was the perfect time for her to run Rayna out of the village. So when Rayna was only 12 years old… she was charged with the murder of her own mother.
While the terrified child tried to escape, strange things started to happen. As she ran, flames trailed behind her. In a matter of seconds, the whole house was engulfed by flames.
She had never returned to the earth village, and didn’t plan on it. Rayna, having reached the age of 13, entered the air village and was asked to stay the night in the home of the Demon Lord of Air. The Lady of the house told her that the Demon Lord had been missing for about 2 weeks… but she allowed her to stay one night to regain her strength.
That night, she had befriended the son of the demon lord, but later had saved him from the beatings of his insane mother, who, in fact had killed the Demon Lord himself. Rayna, not knowing what to do, killed the woman. She felt horrible, but the boy assured her that she did the right thing, and then he introduced himself to her as Haru.
She stayed with Haru for 3 days, but then had to be on her way to find her Haku. Haru, grateful to Rayna, gave her a horse so that she’d be able to travel more quickly, and an amulet… so she would remember him.
She heard rumors of a very powerful bounty hunter that could find anyone he has been asked to find… if the price is right. Rayna postponed her search for her brother, and instead, went in search for the bounty hunter.
It took her a few weeks, but she found him! But something startled her, the bounty hunter… Looked just like her father!!! Well not exactly like him. Her father had black hair, and the bounty hunter had silver, but other than that and the fact that the boy looked about 20 years younger than him… they were pretty much identical!
In her search for the bounty hunter, she found the person she had been looking for all along, Haku.
He taught her the skills of bounty hunting and also trained her in the skill of “Twin Blades”. After two years, they got a job to track down a water demon rogue, who had stolen a great amount of money from the nobles of the water village. One morning, Rayna woke up to the sound of breaking glass. She looked around to see what had broken, but instead she saw a skinny yellow tail sticking out of the pack that she carried her belongings in. She ran over and grabbed the tail… pulling out a small yellow monkey.
Rayna was confused when it changed into a water demoness, but they soon became friends, until Haku informed her that the girl was the bandit they had been tracking. The girl later let them know that her name was Kiyo and that she meant no harm when taking the money. Let us say that Kiyo got off the hook because Haku has a soft spot for girls with a cute face. And not to much longer they met up with Haru again who had, apparently been searching for Rayna. Haku didn’t particularly like the fact that some guy had been searching for his sister for about 2 years. Thus making Haku hate Haru.
“Hello? Rayna… come back to us Rayna.”
Rayna jerked out of her thoughts as Kiyo grabbed her shoulder. She looked over at her. Kiyo had a worried look on her face. She then asked. “Are you going to tell me what’s up or not?”
Rayna shook her head. “It’s nothing… just don’t worry about it.” she forced a smile “Really it’s nothing.
“Okay… whatever you say… Any who! I have finally got to the bottom of the case of Haku’s missing bottles of alcohol!!!” Kiyo grinned. Rayna’s face got a kind of guilty look. “W-what is your conclusion?” she asked, sounding kind of nervous.
Kiyo leaned over the end of the bed and came up holding a bottle of vodka. She looked at Rayna with one eyebrow raised, but still smiling. Rayna started to blush. “He-he…” she laughed nervously. “I wonder how that got there.”
“Don’t play innocent! Just pull out the freaking cork, you are going to share this with me!!!” Kiyo yelled, quickly getting up and pressing a button to close the door.
Rayna laughed then uncorked the bottle.
eZf eZf eZf
There was a great pounding in the back of Rayna’s head and she could here distant voices quickly growing louder and more clear.
“Kiyo, why the hell did you let her drink half of that bottle of vodka all by herself?!”
“Haku” Rayna thought to herself. Then came Kiyo’s voice, which sounded very defensive. “It’s not my fault she got drunk and drank the rest of it… I wasn’t all that sober myself!!!”
“YOU ARE 18!!! SHE’S 16!!! YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN DRINKING WITH HER IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!”
There was a moment of silence and then Kiyo hit the nail on the head by saying. “Ohhh, I get it… you wish I was the one that was drunk enough to run around the inn topless!”
“I WHAT!?!!!!” Rayna yelled sitting up very fast. There was an explosion of pain in her head, so powerful that she fell back down.
“See Haku! I Told You That She Would Wake Up Soon!” She heard Kiyo say, she then felt her touch her head.
“How you feeling?” Kiyo said brushing her fingers gently across Rayna’s forehead.
Rayna opened her eyes slowly and instantly closed them again as light quickly flooded her vision. She blinked a couple of times, and her vision adjusted. She saw Kiyo and Haku staring down at her, with looks of relief on their faces.
She groaned “Ugh… w-what happened?” She ached all over, like she had fallen head first off of a fifty-foot cliff. The next thing she knew was that Haku had picked her up and was holding her close.
“Rayna are you all right? Cause if you are…” He started to violently shake her. “THAT WAS MY LAST BOTTLE OF VODKA!!!!”
“Chill out, you daisy picker.” Came a calm voice from behind them. They all turned to see Haru holding a giant, jagged sword.
“Who are you calling a daisy picker?!!” Haku said letting Rayna go and rounding on Haru. “You wanna fight, Punk!?!!”
“Uh, Yeah! But I don’t think it would be a very fair fight considering the fact that I am armed… and you are not.” Haru smirked, knowing that what he said would really get on Haku’s nerves.
“Dammit!” The large earth demon cursed to himself. He then looked up at his opponent. “You lucked out this time you little bastard!!!” He then felt someone grab his hand and start leading him to the inn.
“Come on Haku.” Kiyo laughed holding onto his hand. “Lets leave them alone for a little bit.”
Rayna could hear Haku whining to her best friend as they walked away. Then Haru walked over to her. He helped her to her feet, and hugged her.
“Are you okay?” He whispered in her ear. She nodded and he held her tighter. “Don’t Scare me like that! When I walked out of the woods and saw you lying face down on the ground, I instantly feared the worst!”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you like that.” Rayna whispered into his shoulder.
Haru then tilted her face upward and smiled. “I know you didn’t.” He then softly kissed her on the lips. She closed her eyes. Haru was always so strong and brutal when he needed to be, but he was so gentle when he touched her.
Suddenly, Rayna felt the ground fall out from underneath her, she was dropping.
“RAYNA!!!” Haru yelled grabbing her hand. She opened her eyes and looked up, Haru was holding onto her hand as tight as he could but she could feel herself slipping. She then looked down. There wasn’t a bottom to the hole, only swirling black smoke, and what looked like hands reaching up and grabbing her legs.
“Haru Don’t Let Go!!!” she yelled up to him as the hands started pulling harder on her legs.
“I Won’t I Promise!!!” She looked back up at him and saw that he was also slipping down into the hole, he had sweat dripping down his face.
Rayna then realized the cold truth. If she were to let go, Haru wouldn’t fall in the hole as well, but if he were to keep holding on, they would both be goners. She had reached her decision.
She looked up at him, then smiled as tears started streaming down her cheeks. “Haru…” she started but he cut her off. “No!!! I can read your thoughts remember, I’m not going to let you go!!!”
More tears fell from her eyes “ Haru, I have always loved you… but it’s me or the both of us… and I chose me. I love you” She then… let go.
“RAYNA!!! NOOOOO!!!!”
