"What are you doing?" piped the voice of a young man.
"Huh?" his friend replied.
"You were like in a daydream or something, Leo. I was calling your name and you didn't even hear me."
"Sorry," replied Leo. "I guess I just was getting caught up in my own world."
In truth, Leo Mitchell, a seventeen year old, was daydreaming about his past life, the life he had before his parents died and he was sent to this godforsaken place. An orphanage for "Special" people. Leo didn't want to be special... just normal. He was characterized by his jet black hair, which was medium in length, and his pale, almost translucent skin. His eyes had an amber, reddish glow to them and were often unfocusing, caught in another world. He sometimes felt like he was too big for his own body, and when his emotions got the better of him, he had the need to break free.
His friend was Miles Rappaccini, an attractive, good-natured boy the same age. Leo wasn't that close to him- he hated getting too close to anyone, but Miles was always chatting and smiling at everyone, trying hard to be accepted by everyone. This boy was the son of an Italian immigrant and a native Hawaiian. His mixed blood resulted in tan skin, dark almond shaped eyes, and wavy, chesnut colored hair. His father, a kind of mad scientist, tested some elixers on his son when he was only a baby. A particular elixer caused his skin to take on a sort of toxicity of a poisonous plant. His father never spoke of this to Miles, who wandered through life wondering why no one, not even his mother, would touch him. Too dangerous to be kept in the house, his father sought an orphanage for people with powers and immediatly sent his son there.
Leo stood up and walked to the window while Miles stretched out on the couch, his hoodie and jeans covering almost all of him.
